LeBron James Confirms Return For 21st Season In ESPYs Speech

After a tough defeat against the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals, rumors swirled that LeBron James might consider retiring from the NBA after an impressive 20-season career. Despite playing through a torn tendon in his foot, James displayed incredible determination, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to the third round. In a remarkable Game 4 loss, he played all 48 minutes, scoring 40 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out nine assists.

Understandably, LeBron questioned how much longer he could sustain such a high level of play, especially considering the toll on his body. Lakers executives Rob Pelinka and Darvin Ham acknowledged his need for space to make a decision. However, the team continued their offseason preparations, operating under the assumption that James would return for his 21st season.

LeBron James Will Return For 21st NBA Season

During a Las Vegas Summer League event, Pelinka shared that the Lakers would respect James’ decision and allow him to announce it himself. That moment came at the annual ESPY Awards, where LeBron attended as a nominee for Best Record-Breaking Performance, which he ultimately won after surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time NBA scoring record.

While LeBron’s comments at the end of the previous season left some uncertainty, most people didn’t expect him to retire, so the official announcement didn’t come as a surprise. In fact, James recently expressed excitement on social media about the Lakers’ new additions in free agency, indicating his eagerness to play with the team Pelinka has assembled.

For the upcoming season, LeBron is set to earn $47.6 million, which could potentially be his last with the Lakers. However, he does hold a player option for the 2024-25 season worth $51.4 million. LeBron has also mentioned his desire to play alongside his son Bronny, who will be eligible for the NBA draft next year. Given his 20 seasons of professional basketball and his age of 38, James will now make decisions about his career on a year-to-year basis.
